We joined in a project with Uilleann Arts Centre in Skibbereen and made bells, we decorated a Christmas tree, made cards and other lovely art work. We made our traditional mince pies, painted windows and last but not least we recorded a Concert to send home to parents. For this we did a performance of Jack and the Beanstalk and played some music. The concert provided us with some budding actors and musicians showing very nifty dance moves and singing talent.
Christmas is here and the preparations brought some excitement to the school. Science Week was very enjoyable with many interesting activities for young and old - we have some budding Scientists for the future in Derryclough! This Autumn we have started weaving and the children have enjoyed it immensely. They have produced some beautiful cushions and can be very proud of learning a new skill. Here are some of the colourful results.
In the Senior Room we learned all about the Normans, the people, their lives and their castles. In Art we made castles - easier said than done! It gave us an appreciation of the skills of builders in Norman times who built strong castles, some of which are still standing today.
We were very pleased with our school garden this year, the children (and
teachers!) visited it during the Summer Holidays and took home some lettuce, peas, chilis and strawberries. We grew a very big pumpkin but unfortunately it wasn’t ripe in time for Halloween. There are still some leeks and beans growing to be harvested later. In Science the Senior Room have been learning about ecosystems and habitats
and as Autumn moved in, we focussed on woodlands. As part of this work the children studied the trees around the school, did Art activities based on Autumn and they thoroughly enjoyed searching for hazelnuts on our hazel trees. If there are any squirrels in the neighbourhood they certainly didn’t find any hazelnuts in our garden! We continue to enjoy weekly baking sessions and it is great to see the children’s
skills develop along the way. We have used some produce from our garden and we include sweet and savouries on our list of goodies to make. So far we have made Rice Krispie buns, soup and scones, cookies, jambons, muffins and apple turnovers. A highlight for us this Autumn has been a block of Gymnastic lessons in
Skibbereen Sports Centre. This is the first time we have done Gymnastics lessons outside school and it is great for the children to experience the training and enjoy the wonderful facilities of the Sports Centre. All the children have thoroughly enjoyed it, despite a few stiff muscles afterwards! The first term back at school has flown by and the children have been working
hard but also enjoying many extra activities - everyone agrees that it is great to see schools open and busy. After a cold morning, the sun very obligingly shone and it turned out a glorious afternoon for our Sports Day. We missed the usual gathering of parents, families and past pupils but still enjoyed an active and fun-filled day. Here are some photos to tell some of the story. |
