Laura Deasy came back to spend a week on work experience with us, she is all grown up now in Transition Year and was a great help to us. On one of the days classmate Lisa O'Donovan also called in and it was lovely to see them both, we really missed those visits during Covid. They brought us the two cups they won with Drinagh Rangers soccer, Under 16 Girls Premier League and Cup Winners 2022 – a great achievement!
All the older children have learned to weave and they really enjoyed the process of choosing colours and textures of wool, deciding what wool will match and work well together. Serena and Miriam also learned to knit, another skill to add to their achievements.
Our school Sports Day was great fun with the usual spud and spoon and sack races and much more. Of course it wouldn’t be Sports Day without our Fancy Dress race and the water activity – the sun shone and the children had great fun. For our School Tour we went to The Farm in Grenagh which was very enjoyable – there were lots of farm animals, cute kittens, a tractor ride, a playground, go-carts and much more. A stop on the way home for ice-cream rounded off a busy and pleasant day. And even more photos!! We enjoy Nature walks near the school all year round and we did a Nature treasure hunt on the River Walk near Glen Ilen at the end of June. Despite all the modern technology children have at their fingertips nowadays, they enjoy spotting and picking flowers, popping fairy thimbles and skimming stones in the water as much as previous generations did.
We had a great day out at Cork City Sports and were delighted when Serena Kingston brought home a trophy for second place in her race.
We took a trip into Skibbereen where the younger children had a very energetic time in the TreeHouse and the older children had a more serious visit to the Heritage Centre. We had studied the Famine in History and the Heritage Centre and the Abbey graveyard made the pages we had read come to life and seem all too real. The visit also gave the children the realisation that, sadly, famine still affects parts of the world today.
On May 20th, Holly O'Riordan made her First Holy Communion in All Saints Church in Drimoleague with a group of children from Castledonovan and Drimoleague schools. The sun shone and it was a beautiful day as all the children took a very active and reverent role in the Mass. It was a very special day for the children and their families to celebrate.
Christmas brought lots of excitement and for the first time since Covid a real live audience for our Christmas Concert! It was wonderful to have families in school to watch the children perform and to have the traditional cup of tea and chat afterwards. The children did themselves proud and there was such a lovely warm buzz around the school. We were all so busy enjoying the happy occasion that we have very few photos but here are a few to get a flavour of the night! We had a really interesting visit from Heritage in Schools expert Albert Nolan who gave us really interesting tips on growing vegetables in our school garden. We learned about the best times to grow different vegetables and what grows well together. He also taught us about bats and did a nature walk with us around our grounds. A big Thank You to Skibbereen Garden Centre - they gave us two bags of bulbs free and we planted lots of daffodils and tulips around the school - we can't wait to see them grow! |
