In the Junior Room, we do a lot of our learning about the world using play based methods, called "Aistear". Every few weeks we have a new theme and we explore and learn about that topic while playing. Above are just a few examples of us working on two of our themes this year, New Life (SPHE, Science) caring for a new baby; and Toys (History, SPHE, Art, Maths)
We have been working with a robotic mouse. Here are some pictures and click here for two videos of some of the projects!
We made an ANEMOMETER. This shows us how fast the wind blows by spinning slowly or quickly.
We've had a few hairy mornings on the road, and have seen salt being thrown on the yard! Why? we ask. So... we did some experiments.
After half an hour, we could see that the one with salt on it had melted completely! This is why we put salt on the yard- to melt the ice quickly, so no-one will fall!
Science Experiment with chemistry!!! Teacher brought in lemons!!! Some of us thought they were sweet and we don't mind tasting them. They smell nice too! We wanted to see what happens when you mix something sour like lemon juice with other things we had in the cupboard. We tried an Alka Seltzer, a teaspoon of washing powder, a teaspoon of Epsom salts and some cornflour. We predicted what might happen when we added in a spoonful of lemon juice, then tried it out. Below are some pictures: The Senior Room have Chess? Well we had a Snakes and Ladders tournament this year! Thanks to the very helpful students from the big room who came to act as referees! All just for fun, I hasten to add!
We have been growing caterpillars again this year! They doubled in size every week until they formed their chrysalis. Then it took a few weeks for them to pop out as painted lady butterflies, which they did while we were on our school trip to Fota!. We set them free on the day before the holidays, that was a very special occasion!
Digital Art Week runs from 24th to the 30th of April. You can check out lots of digital art HERE (including ours). We made these pictures on Android tablets, using a free drawing tool called Drawing Board for kids. We also used the camera for some of them. |
